McLeod Sod Farms, Inc.
Family Owned and Operated for over 30 Years
In 1936, James A. McLeod moved his family from Lansing to the outskirts of Grand Ledge. At the time the area was known as the "Old Maid Swamp." Very rich muck soil was just what was needed to grow vegetables. Over the years, he grew potatoes, sugar beets, head lettuce, onions and peppermint. Potatoes were the main crop until about 1965 when the first turfgrass was planted. By 1970, the farm was completely turfgrass, covering about 300 acres. From 1970-2000 the acreage grew to just over 400. At the present time, the sod acreage is just over 300 again due to the shortage in demand for sod.
In 1975, the farm was taken over by Jim and Mitzi McLeod. In the last 30 years, many changes have occurred. An irrigation system was installed on both farms, underground drainage systems in 80% of the fields, a truck fleet consisting of two tractor trailer rigs and a straight truck for the smaller deliveries.
McLeod's ultimate goal was to have an Automatic Sod Harvester on the farm. In the spring of 2005, that goal was finally met!
