Turfgrass
Installation
Measure the area that you plan to
sod. Determine how many
square feet of sod you will need. Remember that sod comes in 2
feet wide by 5 feet long rolls. (10 Square feet in each roll). Now
is the time to place your order. Keep in mind that sod should be
installed the same day you receive it. Prompt installation on the
day of delivery is essential to a strong beginning for your lawn.
Step 1
Preparation-Before the sod arrives,
the area your working with needs proper preparation. Rota till the
area about 4 inches deep. Eliminate drainage problems by having
the soil slope away from sidewalks, foundations and driveways.
Rake in fertilizer, lime, peat, etc as needed. Note: We
now carry soil sample kits in the office, $10.00 ea.
Rake and smooth the soil removing any rocks, roots and debris.
Fill in any "low" spots you may come across. Keep the grade
approximately 2 inches below sidewalks and driveways.
Step 2
Installing your New Sod- Install
the sod Immediately upon delivery. Begin installing turf along the
longest straight line, such as a driveway or a sidewalk. Butt and
push edges and ends together tightly, without stretching. Avoid
overlapping or gaps between rolls. Stagger the joints in each row
in a brick-like fashion, using a sharp knife to trim corners.
Avoid leaving small strips on the outer edges as they will not
retain moisture. After installing the turf, roll the entire
area to improve turf / soil contact and remove air pockets. -Do
This Before Watering-Begin watering your sod within 30 minutes of
installation.
Step 3
Watering-Give your new lawn at
least 1 inch of water within 1/2 hour of installation. Water daily
making sure the turf is moist until it is firmly rooted in. This
takes about 2 weeks. Then less frequent, deeper watering should
begin. Be certain that your new lawn has enough moisture to
survive hot, dry or windy conditions. Water area near buildings
more often as reflected heat dries the turf.
A few things to remember:
-
During the first three weeks,
avoid heavy traffic on your new lawn
-
After your new lawn has rooted
in, mow often, removing no more than1/3 of the grass
height.
-
Keep mower blades sharp
