Getting the fields planted

 It's Time For Fall
 Maintenance

Now is the time to start thinking about Fall maintenance to our lawns and the equipment that maintains our lawns. It’s time for that fall application of fertilizer and also it’s a good time for over seeding if you need it. Get the seeding done early because if you wait too long you’ll have to wait until December to dormant seed. Anytime is a good time for laying sod! If you are patching your lawn, you will have to mow around the patches for awhile, until they root in. If you have trees that drop leaves, pick up the leaves before you put down you’re last fertilizer application for the year. 46-0-0 is the last application, usually applied sometime in November to early December. “Remember this about fertilizer” If you only fertilize your lawn once a year, do it in the fall. The plant takes in the nitrogen and stores it for the winter, making the plant stronger and more resilient to disease come spring. A couple other points I’d like to cover is sharpening those mower blades early fall- You can lower your deck below 3” but I usually leave mine at 3”-3 ¼” at all times. Another point I want to cover is rolling your lawn. I used to say roll the lawn spring and fall but over the years I can see no change in my lawn. I talked with Dr. Trey Rogers (the Lawn Geek) about lawn rolling and he recommends core aerating your lawn instead. Research shows that rolling compresses the soil. Core aerating does a better job. Leave the cores on the ground and let them dissolve. -Jim
